The court building was built with money from the Confederate Widows Pension Fund, and therefore dedicated to the men of Texas who fought for the Confederacy and the widows of those who fell in battle. This is commemorated with two plaques inside the court building. The plaques have been on the wall in the court building since 1954.

The NAACP demanded that Governor Bush remove the plaques as they deemed them offensive. Initially, back in February of this year, the Governor said he didn't want to remove the plaques and was willing to add a plaque that put the dedication in "its correct historical context." However, in an about face, the governor had the plaques replaced, in the dark of night, with plaques that were more politically correct and practically ignore Texas's Southern history.

Southern heritage groups were almost totally ignored in this process. The governor has refused to personally comment or respond to questions by his Texas constituents on this Clintonian behavior.

This isn't the only heritage attack taking place in Texas. The Hays County School District has created a committee to decide whether or not to remove the battle flag from their high school, as their mascot is the "Rebels." The black population in Hays Co. is 2%, white is 60% and Hispanic is 38%. Opposition to the flag in the county is almost zero, yet the vast majority of the population may be forced to give up their high school's well-loved symbol, which appears on all the school's athletic uniforms, due to pressure from the liberal press and the national office of the NAACP.

In Galveston, TX the African-American Chamber of Commerce has attempted to have the SCV logo removed from the welcome sign that includes a variety of social organizations. So far this effort has failed.

The NAACP has plans to introduce a bill to the state legislature during the Jan-May 2001 session that will ban all Confederate symbols from all Texas public schools. In response to all these attacks, the Texas Heritage Coalition has planned a rally in Austin, TX.

The coalition is made up of members of the SCV, League of the South, Confederate Rose, Daughters of the Confederacy, the Southern Party and various other heritage and re-enactment groups. The rally, which is to be preceded by a parade, is planned for October 21st on the capitol steps. The name for the rally is "Texans for Dixie," and the theme is "Fighting for our heritage, our monuments, our future."

Southerners from across Dixie are requested to attend this rally. Texas is big, but we need all the help we can get. Due to Governor Bush's presidential campaign, the Texas press is limiting our ability to get our side of the story out. The October 21st date is ideal for making a statement right before the national elections and getting our Southern heritage in the national news, letting the world know Southerners won't stand for being erased from history.
